Carmichael supports armed forces mail rates

ORKNEY and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has written to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown MP urging him to reconsider the decision to remove British Forces Post Offices (BFPO) from mainland Europe.
Armed Forces have been advised that the (BFPO) facilities in mainland Europe will be shut from September 2010. Personnel, and their families, deployed in Europe currently enjoy the same postal rates as the UK.
Commenting Mr Carmichael said: "The withdrawal of BFPO from mainland Europe will have a serious impact
on our personnel's ability to communicate with their families in the UK
and to receive parcels and packages through a secure network. The
withdrawal could also cause problems with the distribution of postal
votes for next year's general election.
"I have written to the Prime Minister asking him to reverse the
decision to cut BFPO from Europe which is of such importance to our
overseas military forces."
Mr Carmichael today signed the online Number 10 Downing Street petition
relating to this matter which now has over 50,000 signatures.
