VISITS by leading Scottish crime writers, stories and crafts with Britt Harcus, and live music from Douglas Montgomery and young musicians are just some of the fun on offer during Discovery Week at the Orkney Library and Archive.
The biannual event kicks off on Thursday, March 4 to coincide with
World Book Day, and aims to highlight the wide range of services and
resources available through a series of events and promotions.
Library and Archive Manager Gary Amos hopes to see some new faces
during Discovery Week: "We know our service is valued by our regular
users but there are people who have never been to the library and
archive. We invite everyone to come along during Discovery Week and
find out what we can do for you - there is much more than books to be
had. Whether it is study and research or leisure and entertainment,
there is something for everyone at Orkney Library and Archive."
On Thursday, Britt Harcus will be joining in the stories, crafts and
fun in the Kirkwall junior library, for the grown ups there will be
Tales of Exploration with Tom Muir in the Orkney Room.
The ever popular book sale starts on Friday in Kirkwall and Stromness
Libraries, while the Photographic Archive will be selling framed and
unframed prints. That afternoon a representative from the Digital
Switchover Help Scheme will be in the Kirkwall Library foyer to answer
questions.
There is a chance for people to have a look around the mobile libraries
on Saturday there and there will be a Bookstart Rhymetime with Jane and
Patsy. Also on Saturday is a visit from two of Scotland's leading
writers of crime fiction; Allan Guthrie and Stuart MacBride will be
holding a seminar and workshop in the MacGillivray Room.
Monday sees Liam McArthur MSP officially opening the new Reference Room
in Kirkwall, a facility that will provide a spacious and comfortable
area for people to study. Liam, a regular user of the service, said:
"The library is Kirkwall's Aladdin's Cave. You can access the web for
free, read the papers, rent CDs or DVDs and even trawl the archives for
funny photos of your old teachers or classmates. Oh, and their
collection of books is rather impressive as well."
This will be followed by a coffee morning in aid of the Haiti appeal.
The U3A will also be on hand with information about who they are and
what they do. BBC Radio Orkney's Bruck programme will be coming live
from the foyer in Kirkwall on Monday night. Everyone is welcome to come
along to watch the show and hear the live music from Douglas Montgomery
and young musicians.
Stromness Library has a coffee afternoon on Tuesday and that evening
Kirkwall and Stromness will be hosting Gone with the Wine, with free
wine tasting, nibbles and the best fiction and non-fiction titles from
around the world.
On Wednesday you are invited to come for 'Broth & Breid' at
Kirkwall Library, with donations to the Haiti appeal. The felting group
will be in the foyer that evening.
Running throughout the week will be prize competitions for adults and
children. There are also free loans from the CD and DVD collection and
all service users, including new members, will be entered in a draw to
win an iPod Shuffle.
