05/03/2010 14:53:00
A FULL SCALE rescue was launched last night (Thursday) after a man who was attempting to free a bird trapped in a bush himself became trapped on a ledge on cliffs near Kirkwall.
Shetland Coastguard who co-ordinated the rescue said that they were informed of the situation on the cliffs at Inganess around 5.30pm.
It appeared that the man had decided to climb the cliff to free a bird trapped in prickly bush.
The Sumburgh based Coastguard helicopter made for the scene, but was
stood down after the man was rescued and lowered to the shore by the
Kirkwall Coastguard Rescue Team. The St Margaret's Hope Rescue Team had
also been called out to the incident.
The man was uninjured and did not require any medical treatment.
A Coastguard spokesman said that care should be taken when near cliffs
and that the man had been very lucky not to have been injured as a
result of the incident.
Coastguards added that the outcome could have been very different if the ledge had given way.
